Summary
A ragtag group of adventurers arrived by boat at the frontier town of Myeve, a small, fort-like village on the edge of a newly discovered land that many were calling the Arch Wilds. Having spent three weeks at sea together, the party disembarked and made their way to the center of town, where a bustling tavern called Odin’s Eye welcomed them with warm light and the smell of drink. A bartender named Jax, a man with dark skin and long dreadlocks, greeted them and offered a round of drinks while a massive magical orb cast a bluish glow across the entire room, projecting visions of other adventurers out in the wilds — including a harrowing scene of a green dragon perched atop a tower and a group of explorers cowering from a floating, tentacled horror in the dark underground. Jax explained that the orb broadcast the exploits of adventurers wearing special magical necklaces, and that entertaining enough performances could earn the wearers tips and gold from the tavern’s patrons. The party eagerly accepted the necklaces, each choosing their own command word to activate the broadcast.
The following morning, the group gathered for breakfast, arguing passionately over the quality of the food — particularly a heated debate about the presence of feta cheese — before properly introducing themselves to one another. Among them were Thunda, a pale, dark-haired human sorcerer with a stormy nature and sharp hearing; Barnabas, a towering Goliath fighter who went by Barnaby, clad in chain mail and carrying a massive war axe; Tibble, a sharply dressed forest gnome with swirling tattoos that curled from his throat to his fingertips; Izzy, a tiny goblin druid barely three feet tall, wearing a brown trench coat and an enormous floppy hat while carrying a stick; and Corneleus, a magical talking cat familiar of unknown origin who wore a droopy brown robe and had very strong opinions about raw bacon. The group also examined a crude map carved into one of the tavern’s tables, noting locations with names like Bone Speaker Jungle, Black Dragon Temple, Pirate Cove, and Kobold Cave by the Sea. After consulting with Jax about the relative dangers of the surrounding region, the party agreed that the Kobold Cave by the Sea seemed like a reasonable first destination.
Before setting out, the adventurers stopped at the local general store, run by a Drow woman with a sharp eye for business. When the party balked at the steep price of healing potions, the shopkeeper offered a discount in exchange for taking her young niece, Lestra, along as a hireling. Lestra turned out to be a tall, fair-faced Drow woman of about fifty years in Drow terms — still practically a teenager by her people’s reckoning — who was immediately enthusiastic about joining the group. She took an instant liking to Corneleus, scooping him up and declaring him the most beautiful creature she had ever held, and christened him Mr. Buttons on the spot. The party stocked up on healing supplies, acquired a shield, and set off from Myeve with their new companion in tow.
The journey to the cave took the better part of a day, and the group made camp without incident at the edge of the safe zone surrounding Myeve. Lestra, who did not need to sleep, spent the night in quiet meditation and had a full breakfast of garlic-seasoned bacon, eggs, and mushrooms ready for the party by morning. After eating, the adventurers pressed on toward the coast, eventually arriving at the base of towering eighty-foot cliffs where the cave entrance yawned darkly before them. They observed a group of ten kobolds carrying small pouches into the cave, and Corneleus, using his ability to speak with animals, struck up a conversation with a local crab on the beach. The crab, whom Corneleus solemnly dubbed Sir Left Claw, warned them that a large green scaled creature flew out of the cave each evening to hunt, dropping prey onto the beach to cripple them before returning to feed.
Before the party could fully process this information, a human woman came crashing down from the sky and slammed into the sand in front of them. She was Eneret, a barbarian from the mountain people who had been sent to prove her worth by slaying a dragon and had unfortunately found Gary. The party quickly tended to her broken bones, splinted her up as best they could, and tucked her into a sheltered fern bush before slipping into the cave. They crept past three kobolds who were too busy arguing over a card game to notice them, and followed Sir Left Claw’s directions deeper into the cave until they emerged into a breathtaking chamber — a cavern nearly a hundred and fifty feet tall, filled floor to ceiling with a mountain of glittering gold.
Atop the hoard, a greatsword caught the light, and Barnabas reached out and took it. The moment his fingers closed around the hilt, a dark voice slithered into his mind — a voice that called itself Zell. It asked, in a tone of quiet menace, which of his companions was the weakest, and which one he could kill in their sleep. Barnabas found, to his horror, that he could not let go of the blade no matter how hard he tried. Izzy attempted to blast the sword from his grip with a burst of magical light, but the weapon held fast, and Zell continued to whisper its dark promises of making Barnabas the best version of himself by eliminating all weakness. The rest of the party began rifling through the hoard and discovered several other treasures: a seemingly bottomless magical haversack, a potent healing draught, and a set of iron bands that could be hurled at an enemy to wrap them in a restraining net.
The celebration was short-lived. Gary the green dragon walked into his treasure chamber, and the party dove into the gold pile in a panic — legs, tails, and a glowing sword hilt sticking out at odd angles. Gary surveyed the scene with the calm of someone who had seen it all before, noting with quiet authority that he knew every single piece of gold in his hoard and that the pile had not been that tall when he left. He plucked the party members out one by one and, rather than incinerating them on the spot, subjected Barnabas to a bizarre mock job interview, asking about his weaknesses, his management style, and whether he was truly authentic. He then informed the group that they would retrieve the woman he had dropped on the beach, or the cat would be forfeit.
While the rest of the party slipped out of the cave — some of them disguised as kobolds using a theatrical costume kit — Corneleus attempted to buy time by announcing he needed to find a litter box and began wandering away from the dragon. Gary was not fooled. He snatched Mr. Buttons up by the scruff of his neck, and the brave little cat, rather than submitting, raked his claws across the dragon’s eye in a final act of defiance. Gary, unamused, bit down and swallowed the cat whole. The party, watching from the cave entrance in their kobold disguises, witnessed the end of Mr. Buttons and fled into the open air, scooping up the injured Eneret from her fern bush as they ran.
Eneret, once she understood the situation, was moved by the party’s vow to return and avenge their fallen companion. She explained that she had come to the island specifically to slay a dragon and prove herself to her people, and that she would gladly join their cause once she had healed. The group made a forced march back toward Myeve, pushing through exhaustion to put as much distance between themselves and Gary as possible. As the familiar borders of the safe zone came into view, however, something strange began to follow them — a gigantic floating cloud with what appeared to be a tower perched on top of it, drifting silently in the same direction they were walking.
The party stopped at a nearby farmhouse to ask about the cloud, but the local farmer and his son knew nothing of floating towers and were more preoccupied with the farmer’s suspicions about his wife’s cooking. The group pressed on, and it was Thunda who noticed a strange magical sigil etched into the ground beneath the cloud’s shadow. Before anyone could stop her, she stepped onto it and vanished. The rest of the party exchanged a look and followed, one by one, materializing inside a strange room within the tower itself. There they found Jali, a pink-skinned Tiefling assassin who had stumbled into the tower the same way — by accidentally stepping on the sigil — and who described his profession through a series of riddles that eventually made it clear he was paid to make certain people stop feeling anything ever again.
The room they found themselves in was dominated by a massive chessboard, with a smaller control board set on a table to the side. A staircase led upward to a trapdoor, but opening it revealed only water on the other side, offering no obvious escape. When one of the party members moved a piece on the small board, they were instantly teleported onto the giant board, becoming the piece they had moved and frozen in place. The opposing black pieces moved on their own, countering every strategy the party attempted. Despite their best efforts, the game ended in defeat, leaving several party members unconscious on the board before the magic released them back to their normal forms. As the others tended to the fallen, Corneleus quietly began the process of summoning a new familiar — this time, an octopus — and the party settled in to recover, battered and grieving, deep within the mysteries of a tower that had chosen them for reasons none of them yet understood.
Short
A group of adventurers arrived by boat at the frontier town of Myeve, on the edge of a newly discovered land called the Arch Wilds. At a tavern called Odin’s Eye, they met a bartender named Jix, who outfitted them with magical broadcasting necklaces before they introduced themselves over breakfast: Thunda, a stormy human sorcerer; Barnabas, a towering Goliath fighter; Tibble, a sharply dressed forest gnome; Izzy, a tiny goblin druid; and Corneleus, a magical talking cat with strong opinions about bacon. After consulting a map carved into the tavern table and speaking with Jix about local dangers, the party agreed to investigate the Kobold Cave by the Sea, picking up a Drow hireling named Lestra — and a discount on healing potions — from the local general store before setting out.
Upon reaching the cave, the party learned from a crab named Sir Left Claw that a green dragon flew out each evening to hunt. They soon discovered why, when a battered barbarian named Eneret came crashing from the sky — the dragon’s latest victim. After stabilizing her, the party crept into the cave and found a massive treasure hoard, where Barnabas unwittingly claimed a cursed greatsword housing a sinister entity called Zell, which he could not release. When the dragon, Gary, returned and caught them rifling through his gold, he subjected them to a mock job interview before demanding they retrieve Eneret or forfeit the cat. Corneleus attempted to stall Gary but was swallowed whole in an act of defiant bravery. The grieving party fled with Eneret, who vowed to join them in avenging Mr. Buttons once healed. On the march back to Myeve, a mysterious floating tower drifted overhead, and when Thunda stepped on a magical sigil beneath it, the entire party was transported inside. There they met Jali, a Tiefling assassin, and were forced to play a life-sized chess match against enchanted black pieces — a battle they ultimately lost, leaving several members unconscious before the magic released them. As the party recovered, Corneleus began summoning a new familiar, and the group braced themselves for whatever the tower had in store.
Classic
Last we left off, our intrepid band of adventurers arrived by sea at the frontier town of Myeve, a small fort-like settlement on the edge of a wild and largely uncharted land known as the Arch Wilds. There, at a tavern called Odin’s Eye, they were welcomed by a bartender named Jix and a magical orb that broadcast the exploits of adventurers across the region. The party — Thunda the stormy sorcerer, Barnabas the towering Goliath fighter, Tibble the tattooed forest gnome, Izzy the diminutive goblin druid, and Corneleus the opinionated magical cat — accepted enchanted necklaces to join the broadcast, stocked up on supplies, hired a young Drow woman named Lestra, and set their sights on the Kobold Cave by the Sea as their first destination.
Upon arriving at the cave, the group learned from a crab named Sir Left Claw that a green dragon made his home within — a dragon the party would come to know as Gary. Despite this warning, they pressed on, discovered a breathtaking hoard of gold, and made the fateful mistake of touching it. Barnabas found himself bound to a cursed greatsword housing a dark entity called Zell, and the rest of the party helped themselves to several other treasures before Gary himself walked in. Rather than destroying them outright, the dragon subjected them to a peculiar interrogation and issued an ultimatum: retrieve the barbarian woman he had dropped on the beach, or the cat would pay the price. In the chaos of their escape, Corneleus — known to Lestra as Mr. Buttons — made a brave and defiant last stand against the dragon, raking his claws across Gary’s eye before being swallowed whole.
Now, the party has fled back toward Myeve with the injured barbarian Eneret in tow, their hearts heavy with grief and their resolve hardened by vengeance. But the road home brought a new mystery — a floating cloud bearing a tower drifted silently overhead, and a magical sigil on the ground pulled the group inside before they could think better of it. Within, they encountered a pink-skinned Tiefling assassin named Jali and were forced to play a deadly game of living chess against an unseen opponent — a game they ultimately lost. Battered, grieving, and trapped inside a tower of unknown origin and purpose, we pick up as our adventurers tend to their wounds and steel themselves for whatever comes next…
Middle English
Harke well, ye souls of wandering kind, Who sail’d to shores of Arch Wilds’ fame; To Myeve’s fort they came to find Adventure, gold, and lasting name!
At Odin’s Eye they supped and swore, With necklace-charms to broadcast wide; Then Kobold Cave they did explore, With Lestra walking by their side.
But Gary’s hoard did gleam and call, And Barnabas did grasp the blade; Dark Zell did whisper through the hall, And promises of ruin were made.
The dragon came with quiet dread, And plucked them from his golden mound; Brave Corneleus scratched and bled, Then in the dragon’s gullet, drowned.
Now tower-bound by sigil’s snare, They lost at chess and mourned their cat; Yet still they breathe the tower’s air, And vow to rise — imagine that!
Snarky
A group of absolute strangers who spent three weeks on a boat together and somehow still needed formal introductions arrived in Myeve, strapped on magic necklaces so strangers could watch them fail in real time, and immediately decided the most reasonable first adventure was a cave full of kobolds. It was not a cave full of kobolds. It was Gary’s house. Gary is a dragon. They robbed Gary. One of them picked up a cursed sword that immediately started asking which of his friends he should murder first, another one interviewed a crab, and somehow the most competent member of the entire expedition was the Drow teenager they got as a coupon for buying healing potions.
In what can only be described as a series of choices, the party hid in a dragon’s gold pile, got individually plucked out like sad little prizes, and then watched their beloved talking cat — who had been renamed Mr. Buttons against his will — get eaten whole after scratching a dragon in the eye, which is honestly the most heroic thing anyone did all session. They then fled, got magnetically pulled into a mysterious floating tower by a magic floor doodle, lost a game of sentient chess, and are now unconscious on a giant chessboard while the cat’s soul shops for a new body. Incredible work, everyone.
Limerick
They sailed into Myeve by sea, And strapped on their necklaces — free! They’d broadcast their quest, And try for the best, Then headed to where kobolds be!
A crab named Sir Left Claw warned clear: “A big scaly dragon lives here!” They went in anyway, As adventurers may, And grabbed all his gold without fear.
Poor Barnabas gripped a cursed blade, While Zell whispered deals to be made. Then Gary walked in, With a cold, toothy grin, And the party dove into the jade!
Brave Corneleus scratched Gary’s eye, A bold little cat saying goodbye. He was swallowed up whole, A most dignified toll — Now Mr. Buttons has learned how to die.
A sigil pulled them to a tower, Where chess drained their will and their power. They lost every piece, Found no sweet release, And mourned their dead cat by the hour!
Memorable Moments
Mr. Buttons scratches the dragon Gary across the eye in a final act of defiance, only to be bitten and swallowed whole by the enraged dragon, ending the brave cat’s life.
The cat had tried to sneak away under the guise of needing a litter box; the dragon snatched him up and he fought back with everything he had.
“Tell me about your weaknesses. I try too hard. I care a little too much about being authenticist. Sometimes I donate too much to charity.” — Urrilon
Urrilon nervously answers Gary the dragon’s bizarre mock job interview questions while the rest of the party hides in a pile of gold.
“Which one of you is the weakest?” — Zell
The first words spoken by the dark sentient voice of the cursed greatsword Zell into Urrilon’s mind moments after he picked it up from the hoard.
Corneleus speaks with a crab on the beach, dubs him Sir Left Claw, and receives detailed directions to the kobold cave including a warning about the dragon’s hunting schedule.
The party needed intelligence before entering the cave; Corneleus found the most unlikely but surprisingly helpful informant on the beach.
The entire party attempts to hide inside a mountain of gold as the dragon Gary walks into his treasure chamber, with legs and a sword hilt visibly sticking out of the pile.
Panicked by the dragon’s sudden return, the party dove into the gold hoard in a desperate and poorly executed attempt at concealment.
“I want you to know that I know exactly every single piece of gold in there. My pile was not that high.” — Gary
Gary the dragon calmly addresses the party hiding in his gold hoard, immediately seeing through their concealment and noting that they had taken some of his treasure.
