To touch its waters is to lose memory, self, and certainty.
Ferrymen upon it are said to be beyond bribery, pity, or haste.

The River Styx is a dark river flowing through the lower planes.
The party reached it after descending the Infinite Staircase toward the Gray Wastes.
Its waters are profoundly dangerous and can strip memory and identity from those who fall into them.
A silent ferryman carried the party across part of the river by flat-bottomed ferry.
The river carried the party past Pluton and through caves and rapids before depositing them at Carceri.
Wilbur fell into the Styx and emerged emptied of memory and magic.

During the party’s descent toward Carceri, they boarded a ferry on the River Styx and passed through the Gray Wastes.
In the rapids, Wilbur fell overboard and was hauled out only after the river had already taken his memories.
The river route eventually led the party to the blackstone dock and the entrance deeper into Carceri.
